The opioid epidemic in the United States has been a growing concern, with overdoses involving opioids such as fentanyl claiming 69,710 lives in 2020 alone. College students are not immune to this crisis, with one in 12 high school seniors reporting recreational use of oxycodone and half of college students stating they can easily obtain prescription opioids from friends within 24 hours. Naloxone nasal spray is a safe and effective tool in combating opioid overdoses, with no risk of incorrect use or abuse. It can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose in adults and children within two to five minutes and has no effect on individuals without opioids in their system.
Campus Opioid Safety Act
In August 2022, Governor Newsom of California signed the Campus Opioid Safety Act (Act), requiring community college districts, California State University, and requesting the University of California system to provide educational and preventative information about opioid overdose during campus orientations.
