Scientists have long been aware that soil harbors a wealth of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and archaea. However, it was only recently that researchers from Museums Victoria discovered a new world of weird and wonderful creatures living near deep sea volcanoes in the Indian Ocean.
Tracking the Soil Ecosystem
The largest and least understood habitat on Earth, the soil ecosystem, has been tracked for the first time by scientists from Cardiff University. These findings reveal an extensive network of organisms thriving in the soil, contributing significantly to global nutrient cycling, carbon sequestration, and plant growth promotion.
