The global carbon budget is a crucial metric for tracking progress towards climate goals and understanding the implications of various emission scenarios. Global Carbon Budget 2023 presents an accurate assessment of anthropogenic CO2 emissions and their redistribution among the atmosphere, ocean, and terrestrial ecosystems. The report quantifies fossil CO2 emissions (E_FOS), land-use change emissions (E_LUC), and carbon dioxide removal (CDR) by country, including both territorial and consumption-based accounting for E_FOS.
Global average per-capita emissions and climate goals
Global average per-capita emissions reached about 6 tonnes of carbon-dioxyde equivalent (tCO2e) in 2019. To have high chances of staying below +1.5 °C global temperature increase, average per-capita emissions should be 1.9 tCO2e between now and 2050 and zero afterwards.
