Geological Features and Impact Origin
Lonar Lake’s geological features have been divided into five distinct zones, each exhibiting unique characteristics. The outermost ejecta blanket, the crater rim, the slopes of the crater, the crater basin excluding the lake, and the crater lake itself all display distinct geomorphic features that have been studied extensively. The impact origin of the crater is supported by the presence of impact deformation of basalt layers, shocked breccia inside the crater, shatter cones, and the non-volcanic ejecta blanket surrounding the crater. The meteorite impact came from the east at an angle of 35 to 40 degrees.
