In a recent press release, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed a human case of avian influenza, specifically the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N1) virus, in Texas.
Human Case of Avian Influenza in Texas
This is the first human case of HPAI A(H5N1) virus in the United States. The individual is an adult male who was in contact with infected poultry and is currently in the hospital in critical condition.
Transmission and Symptoms
Avian influenza, or “bird flu,” is a type of influenza virus that primarily infects birds. While human infections are rare, they can occur through close contact with infected poultry or their environments. Symptoms of HPAI A(H5N1) virus infection in humans can include fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, and in severe cases, pneumonia, acute respiratory distress, and even death.
Public Health Response
The CDC is working closely with state and local health departments, as well as the U.S. Department of Agriculture, to investigate this case. Health officials are monitoring the individual’s close contacts for any signs of illness and have taken appropriate public health measures.
