The threat of a doomsday asteroid colliding with Earth is a real concern, as demonstrated by past events such as the 1908 Tunguska event and the 2013 asteroid impact. The impact of a doomsday asteroid, similar to the one that wiped out the dinosaurs 66 million years ago, would have catastrophic consequences for humanity, including massive tsunamis and the blockage of sunlight for almost two years.
NASA scientists are currently monitoring a massive asteroid that is heading towards Earth, with a chance of smashing into our planet. According to NASA, asteroids that are 150 meters or larger and could potentially pose a threat to Earth are termed potentially hazardous objects (PHOs). The Asteroid Watch dashboard tracks these PHOs and displays the next five Earth approaches to within 4.6 million miles (7.5 million kilometers or 19.5 times the distance to the moon).
