PFAS are a group of over 14,000 human-made chemicals that have water, grease, and stain-resistant properties. They have been commonly found in household products like non-stick frypans, clothing, cosmetics, insecticides, and food packaging, as well as specialty industry products, like firefighting foam. Despite their usefulness, PFAS have a dark side: they are known as ‘forever chemicals’ because once they’re in the environment or our bodies, they don’t degrade further.
PFAS Contamination in Australia
The elevated PFAS levels in Australian water sources were often observed near military and industrial sites where firefighting foams containing PFAS were historically used. These facilities, such as military bases and training centers, have contributed to the widespread contamination of local surface and groundwater resources.
