California’s Net-Zero Carbon Pollution Plan
In November 2022, California released its updated plan to achieve net-zero carbon pollution by 2045. This plan, which follows Governor Gavin Newsom’s push for more ambitious climate action, is the world’s first detailed pathway to carbon neutrality and is expected to create 4 million new jobs, slash greenhouse gas emissions by 85%, and cut oil usage by 94%. The plan includes a comprehensive roadmap to reduce air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and fossil fuel consumption, while also investing in clean energy and climate resiliency.
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is responsible for implementing this plan, which will be a critical component of Governor Newsom’s California Climate Commitment. The updated Scoping Plan aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045, in addition to cutting air pollution by 71%, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 85% by 2045, and decreasing fossil fuel consumption by more than 90%. The plan also includes measures to create 4 million new jobs and save Californians $200 billion in health costs due to pollution.
