To facilitate the collection of data during the eclipse, NASA has developed the GLOBE Eclipse tool, a temporary feature in the GLOBE Observer app. This tool allows citizen scientists to document air temperature and clouds during the eclipse, contributing to a citizen science database used by scientists and students to study the effects of eclipses on the atmosphere.
The GLOBE Eclipse Tool and Citizen Science Observations
The GLOBE Eclipse tool is part of the broader GLOBE project, which encourages students and citizen scientists to collect data on various environmental factors, including plants, soil, water, the atmosphere, and even mosquitoes. Contributors will only need a thermometer and a smartphone with the GLOBE Observer app downloaded. They can access the eclipse tool in the app, which will help them record temperature and cloud observations during the eclipse.
