In a groundbreaking discovery, scientists have detected rippling gravitational waves more powerful than any identified before. These waves, which emanate from intense gravitational events such as black hole and neutron star mergers, are enormous with a single peak and trough of one of the waves measuring tens of light-years. The discovery was made by the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav), the National Science Foundation, and the Flatiron Institute research division of the Simons Foundation.
Supermassive Black Hole Collisions
The waves are thought to have originated in the collisions of supermassive black holes, billions of years ago.
