The beetle, named *Excastra albopilosa*, was discovered by James Tweed, a researcher from The University of Queensland, while camping in Queensland’s Gold Coast Hinterland in December 2021. The beetle is covered in long white hairs, especially around the top half of its body, and is approximately 10 millimeters long. Tweed initially thought it was a type of longhorn beetle, but after further examination, he realized that it was a new genus and species. The name *Excastra albopilosa* translates to “from the camp, white and hairy,” which is fitting for this unique insect.
