A recent study conducted by researchers at Dartmouth College has uncovered hidden dangers in popular seafoods, specifically in the form of arsenic. Arsenic is a naturally occurring element in soil and water, and all plants, including seafood, take up arsenic. However, not all forms of arsenic are created equal.
Inorganic Arsenic: The Concerning Form
The study found that the more concerning form of arsenic is the inorganic variety, which can be harmful to human health. Inorganic arsenic has been linked to an increased risk of cancer, as well as other health issues such as cardiovascular disease and neurological problems.
Seafood and Arsenic Levels
The researchers analyzed the arsenic content in a variety of seafood, including fish, shrimp, and seaweed. They found that some types of seafood contained higher levels of inorganic arsenic than others. For example, certain types of seaweed and certain fish species, such as tuna, contained higher levels of inorganic arsenic.
Recommendations for Seafood Consumption
Based on the findings, the researchers recommend that individuals be mindful of their seafood consumption and choose options with lower levels of inorganic arsenic. They suggest consuming a variety of seafood, including those with lower arsenic levels, such as salmon and cod. Additionally, they recommend limiting the consumption of certain high-arsenic seafood, such as some types of seaweed and tuna.
