In a remarkable discovery, scientists have unearthed the fossil of a colossal snake in India, estimated to be around 49 feet long. This prehistoric serpent, yet to be formally named, is believed to have been longer than a school bus and weighed a tonne. The finding has sparked excitement in the scientific community, as it provides new insights into the ancient world and the evolution of these fascinating creatures.
The fossil belongs to the Madtsoiidae family, an extinct group of medium-sized to gigantic snakes that first appeared during the later part of the Cretaceous period, around 145 million years ago. These snakes are thought to have grown up to 30 feet in length, making them formidable predators in their time.
The discovery was made in the Himalayan mountains of Ladakh, where researchers from the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Panjab University, Indian Institute of Technology, and Comenius University in Slovakia collaborated on the study.
