Choline is vital for brain health, regulating mood, and overall brain and nerve cell health. It plays a role in the production of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in learning, memory, and muscle control.
The study found that choline is actively transported from the bloodstream into the brain by a protein called FLVCR2, which is densely present in the blood-brain barrier. The blood-brain barrier, a protective cell layer that shields the brain from toxins and harmful pathogens, also prevents many drugs from entering the brain.
