In a groundbreaking discovery, researchers have developed a new type of computer that challenges the traditional binary system and quantum computing. This innovative technology, known as a probabilistic computer, utilizes 2D magnetic devices to handle complex machine learning tasks and data processing problems that are incredibly challenging for traditional and even quantum computers.
Probabilistic Bits and Their Unique Properties
The research team, led by Hua Chen and Allan MacDonald, has developed what they call probabilistic bits, or p-bits. These p-bits can switch between ‘0’ and ‘1’ (two spin states) based on the tunneling current-controlled probabilities. This unique property allows p-bits to mimic neurons in the brain, forming a new type of computer that can solve complex problems currently considered intractable.
